Warrick County Community Foundation is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2026 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship for Warrick County: Annabelle Fox, Boonville High School and Vrinda Sheel, Castle High School. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are recognized for their community involvement, academic achievement, character, and leadership.

"All of this year’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program recipients from Warrick County exemplify excellence both in and beyond the classroom. Their dedication to academics, community engagement, and leadership stood out throughout the scholarship process, reflecting a level of maturity and purpose well beyond their years," said Alysia Rhinefort, Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact.

Each Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides full tuition, required fees, and up to $900 per year for required books and equipment for four years of full-time undergraduate study leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university. Scholars also join the Lilly Scholars Network (LSN), which connects them with resources and opportunities to lead on campus and in their communities. Both the scholarship program and LSN are supported by grants from Lilly Endowment to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI).

"I am so incredibly grateful to be among those selected for this scholarship. This not only financially supports me and my family, but inspires me to continue serving others, pursuing academic excellence, and impacting my community. My future plans include attending Purdue University to obtain a bachelor’s degree in chemical or environmental engineering," said Annabelle Fox, Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.

In nominating Warrick County’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholars, the committee considered academic ability, community involvement, extracurricular activities, work experience, honors and awards, personal statement and goals, essay, and impromptu essay and interview. After narrowing the field of applicants, nominees were submitted to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI), the statewide administrator of the program, for final selection.

Since its inception in 1997-1998, Lilly Endowment has supported this program with tuition grants totaling more than $505 million, benefiting over 5,400 Indiana students. The program’s primary purposes are:

To raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana.

To increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations play.

To encourage and support Lilly Scholars’ engagement with Indiana leaders to improve quality of life statewide.

$6.7 Million Grant to Build a Sanctuary for Veterans' Healing and Renewal

Community Foundation Alliance, in conjunction with Warrick County Community Foundation, has received a grant of $6,715,058 from Lilly Endowment Inc. through the competitive Community Leadership Implementation Grants component of the eighth phase of its Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow (GIFT VIII) initiative. This is one of 30 implementation grants awarded through GIFT VIII, a statewide Lilly Endowment initiative designed to support the efforts of community foundations and their partners to strengthen the quality of life for the people in the towns, cities, counties, and regions they serve.

With the grant, Warrick County Community Foundation, in collaboration with Gibson, Posey, and Vanderburgh Community Foundations, affiliates of the Community Foundation Alliance, Inc., are partnering with Mission First, Inc. to develop Sanctuary on the Hill.

Through collaborative community partnerships, Sanctuary on the Hill will be a retreat nestled on a tranquil 90-acre parcel of land in northern Warrick County that will offer a refuge for healing, treatment, and renewal for military veterans in the region and their families.

The Sanctuary will be built in three construction phases and will include an activity center, main lodge, cabins, horse barn and arena, and recreational amenities. This grant will fund phases two and three of construction. Phase one, the construction of the activity center, has already begun. Phase two will begin in early 2025. The Sanctuary will finish construction of its facilities and open to serve veterans from multiple military branches in the four-county region initially, with a plan to work with all Indiana veterans south of I-70.

“We envision this incredible regional asset as much more than a physical location where services are provided but as a place where veterans can feel like they belong,” said Jill Carpenter, President and CEO of the Community Foundation Alliance. “It is a hub for holistic support and a continuum of care. This investment aims to help veterans know they are appreciated, supported, and embraced by their community.”

All buildings and spaces are being developed through a strategic, phased approach, focused on creating a veteran-centric environment. The design will address the unique mental health needs of veterans. Key features include open sightlines, acoustic treatments, calming aesthetics, and ample personal space to promote safety and comfort. This sets the Sanctuary apart as a truly supportive and healing environment for veterans.

In 1990, Lilly Endowment launched the Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow (GIFT) initiative to help establish and further develop community foundations throughout Indiana. Lilly Endowment hoped that Indiana’s community foundations could enhance the quality of life in their communities by convening conversations among people of diverse ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, occupations, races, and cultural traditions about their communities’ most compelling needs and opportunities, as well as the best ways to address them.

The Warrick County Community Foundation would like to recognize an advisory board member that recently completed their volunteer service on the county advisory board: Alfonso Vidal. We extend a heartfelt appreciation for his service and dedication to making a lasting impact in our community.

Volunteer members of the advisory board play a vital role in the success of the Community Foundation. They focus on local asset development, learning about the community’s greatest needs and nonprofits that support those needs, and recommending grants and scholarships. "The accomplishment of our mission greatly depends on the proactive involvement of community members in our advisory board. Their passionate volunteer work represents a continuous and dedicated commitment of time, all directed towards ensuring that donations consistently result in a beneficial influence on the well-being of individuals living in Warrick County," said advisory board president Angela Wilder.

Community Foundation Alliance Recognizes Staff Member Michele Gates

The Community Foundation Alliance would like to congratulate staff member Michele Gates on her recent anniversary of employment. Gates selected Mae’s Way Foundation to receive a $500 grant through the Generosity at Work Grant Program to recognize her work anniversary with the Alliance.

The recently introduced Generosity at Work Grant Program enables Alliance staff members to contribute to the communities they serve, on their work anniversary, by recommending a $500 grant to the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization of their preference through the Ronald L. Bauer Regional Fund.

Gates recently celebrated her first work anniversary as the Program Assistant supporting the work of the Chief Program Officer and the program staff in the Alliance’s footprint of nine local county affiliates. Gates embodies philanthropy through both her career and personal life, as the founder of Mae’s Way Foundation, and she can often be heard sharing the words “You Matter” to those around her. Her passion for helping those left behind by suicide fueled her to write the book Mae The Courageous Caterpillar which invites children who have suffered a loss to know and feel they matter.

It only seemed natural that Gates’ $500 grant was awarded to Mae’s Way Foundation for general support. "Passion fuels purpose, and supporting an organization you deeply care about not only empowers its mission but also ignites a fire within you to create meaningful change," explained Gates. “As a child left behind by suicide, I wanted to build an organization to remind other children they are not alone and they are loved.” The Foundation’s camps, workshops, resources, scholarships, and mental health counseling assistance are just a few ways they reach those children.

Mae’s Way Foundation was established in 2021 as an organization to reach, serve, and support children (and their families) left behind by suicide. Earlier this year, the organization received the Celebration of Leadership Award in Community & Neighborhood by Leadership Everyone. Learn more information about Mae’s Way Foundation at

Lilly Endowment Community Scholars may also participate in the Lilly Scholars Network (LSN), which connects both current scholars and alumni with resources and opportunities to be active leaders on their campuses and in their communities. After the field of applicants was narrowed down, nominees were submitted to ICI, the statewide administrator of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program, which approves the final selection of scholarship recipients.
