Warrick County Community Foundation Announces the 2024 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Recipients
The Warrick County Community Foundation is pleased to announce the two recipients of the 2024 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship for Warrick County are Nathan Keller from Tecumseh High School and Owen Phillips from Boonville High School. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are known for their community involvement, academic achievement, character, and leadership.
“Through this scholarship process, the nominating committee strives to identify students who excel academically and are active in both high school and community activities,” said Sidney Hardgrave, Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact for the Warrick County Community Foundation.
Nathan Keller is the son of Heather Siegfried. He is interested in becoming a lawyer. Nathan has participated in the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership program and enjoys volunteering with youth baseball and football camps and tutoring. At school, he is a member of the football, basketball, baseball, and track teams. Nathan is also a member of the Student Council and Academic Team.
Owen Phillips is the son of Kasey and Tina Phillips. He is planning a career as a lawyer. Owen has served as an ambassador, volunteer, and mentor for the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership program. He also volunteers with Hope Central. Owen’s school activities include Student Government, Swim and Dive Team, the Boonville High School Newspaper, serving as a Pioneer Kick-Off Mentor, and participation in the Warrick County School Corporation Student Think Tank.
Each Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides for full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year for required books and required equipment for four years. The scholarship is for full-time undergraduate students leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars may also participate in the Lilly Scholars Network (LSN), which connects both current scholars and alumni with resources and opportunities to be active leaders on their campuses and in their communities. Both the scholarship program and LSN are supported by grants from Lilly Endowment to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and Indiana Humanities.
In determining Warrick County’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholars nominees, consideration was given to academic achievement, school and community involvement, two essays, and an interview by the Scholarship Nominating Committee. After the field of applicants was narrowed down, nominees were submitted to ICI, the statewide administrator of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program, which approves the final selection of scholarship recipients.
“Warrick County has many excellent students who are committed to their schools and communities. It is never easy for our committee to determine the recipients for the scholarship,” said Hardgrave.
Lilly Endowment created the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program for the 1998-99 school year and has supported the program every year since with grants totaling in excess of $505 million. More than 5,200 Indiana students have received the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship since the program’s inception.
The primary purposes of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program are: 1) to help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana; 2) to increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations can play in their communities; and 3) to encourage and support the efforts of current and past Lilly Endowment Community Scholars to engage with each other and with Indiana business, governmental, educational, nonprofit and civic leaders to improve the quality of life in Indiana generally and in local communities throughout the state.
