Community Scholarship Program

Overview

Many of our donors have honored their loved ones, communities, high schools, colleges, or professions by endowing scholarship opportunities through the Community Foundation. We administer separate scholarship funds established by individuals, families, corporations, and organizations to assist local students in pursuit of advanced education. Together, these scholarships make up our Community Scholarship Program.

Eligibility requirements and selection criteria are determined by our donors. Each scholarship is unique and supports students with a variety of backgrounds, educational goals, and economic statuses. Awards are made without regard to race, creed, color, sex, religion, or national origin and are based on a competitive process which may consider academic achievement, extracurricular activities, personal aspirations, educational goals, financial need, and other criteria.

Annual, renewable scholarship created by the estate of John Gerard in honor of his parents. The scholarship will provide educational support to a graduate of a Posey, Vanderburgh, or Warrick County high school to pursue a nursing degree at a college or university in Southwestern Indiana.

Born in 1915, Dorothy Willett studied nursing and graduated in 1936 from St. Mary’s Hospital Nursing School where she became the first surgical nurse assisting in cataract surgery. Her career continued as a nurse for Republic Aviation factory in Evansville, Indiana, which churned out thousands of P-47 Thunderbolts during World War II. Steve continued in restaurant management and John went on to work in the clerk and assessor’s offices until his retirement.

  • Dahni Jo Memorial Scholarship

Annual scholarship in loving memory of Dahni Jo Shanafelt created by her family and friends to enable her spirit to live on through community and educational activities that help animals and others.

Dahni Jo was a kindergartner at Highland Elementary School. Dahni Jo and her mother died in April of 2020 due to carbon monoxide poisoning. She was a vibrant little girl that had an infectious smile, welcoming eyes, and a very outgoing personality. Everyone that met Dahni Jo remembered her funny ways, friendliness and her hugs – she hugged most everyone she met!

Dahni Jo loved animals and helped her aunt with foster dogs, puppies, kittens, and bunnies. She could be found many Saturdays at PetSmart helping with the animals up for adoption with Another Chance for Animals. Another favorite Saturday activity was to go to Evansville Animal Care and Control. Dahni Jo loved giving the shelter dogs treats, petting the cats, and helping any way she could.
